Battle on the Coordinate Plane

Grades 5–6 · CCSS 5.G.A.1, 5.G.A.2, 6.NS.C.6, 6.NS.C.8 · Pairs with the Battle on the Coordinate Plane game

An ordered pair is (x, y). Start at the origin (0, 0). x comes first: move left or right. y comes second: move up or down.  ·  Negative x = left, negative y = down.

Part A: Read the points (first quadrant)

Write the ordered pair for each point.
1. A =
2. B =
3. C =
4. D =

Part B: Read the points (all four quadrants)

Write the ordered pair for each point.
5. P =
6. Q =
7. R =
8. S =

Part C: Plot and label the points

9. Plot and label each point on the grid.
E (1, −2)    F (−3, 0)    G (−1, 2)    H (2, 3)

Part D: Quadrant or axis?

Write the quadrant (I, II, III or IV), or write axis if the point is on an axis.

10. (2, −3)
11. (−1, −1)
12. (0, 2)
13. (−3, 1)
14. (3, 0)
15. (1, 2)

Part E: Read carefully

16. The y-coordinate is 1 and the x-coordinate is −2. Write the ordered pair.
17. Move 3 units down and 2 units left from the origin. Write the ordered pair.
18. Find the mistake. Sam was told to plot (3, −1). Sam started at the origin, moved 1 unit left, then 3 units down. What went wrong? Where should the point be?

Answer Key: Battle on the Coordinate Plane

For the teacher
  1. A = (2, 5)
  2. B = (5, 2) (the same numbers as A, in the other order, make a different point)
  3. C = (0, 3) (on the y-axis)
  4. D = (4, 0) (on the x-axis)
  5. P = (−2, 3)
  6. Q = (3, −1)
  7. R = (−3, −2)
  8. S = (0, −3)
  9. E is 1 right and 2 down (Quadrant IV); F is 3 left on the x-axis; G is 1 left and 2 up (Quadrant II); H is 2 right and 3 up (Quadrant I).
  10. IV (x positive, y negative)
  11. III (both negative)
  12. axis (x = 0, so it is on the y-axis)
  13. II (x negative, y positive)
  14. axis (y = 0, so it is on the x-axis)
  15. I (both positive)
  16. (−2, 1): x always goes first, even when y is named first.
  17. (−2, −3): left 2 is x = −2, down 3 is y = −3.
  18. Sam used the second number first (and moved left for −1). x = 3 comes first: move 3 units right, then y = −1: 1 unit down. Sam's point was (−1, −3); the correct point is (3, −1).

#2, #16 and #18 catch students who reverse x and y. In the game, the plane always flies left or right first, and repeated shots are allowed, so a reversed shot lands visibly in the wrong place.
