Exit Ticket: The Coordinate Plane

Grades 5–6 · CCSS 5.G.A.1, 6.NS.C.6, 6.NS.C.8
Name
1. Which quadrant is (−2, 3) in?
2. The y-coordinate is −1 and the x-coordinate is 3. Write the ordered pair.
3. Is (0, −3) in a quadrant? Explain.

Answer Key: Exit Ticket

The Coordinate Plane
  1. Quadrant II (x negative: left; y positive: up)
  2. (3, −1) (x always goes first, even when y is named first)
  3. No. x = 0, so the point is on the y-axis, 3 units below the origin. Points on an axis are not in any quadrant.

Quick read: (−1, 3) on #2 means the student wrote the numbers in the order they were read; "Quadrant III" or "IV" on #3 means they don't yet see axis points as a separate case. Have them play Hard mode, where the computer's shots often name y first and Radar Checks include points on an axis.
