Teaching Notes for Educators

A real sea battle against the computer, played like the classic ship-hunting board game, where every shot is an ordered pair. Students place two ships, fire by typing coordinates, and must find each of the computer's shots on their own board.

• Three modes: Easy uses the first quadrant (0 to 6, origin in the bottom-left). Standard uses all four quadrants (−3 to 3, origin in the center). Hard (Coordinate Commander) uses all four quadrants with a timer, typed ordered pairs, and short Radar Check questions.
• Ships sit on points, not in squares: Boat Buddy covers 3 points and Giant Galley covers 4, horizontal or vertical, and they can lie on an axis or across the origin.
• The plane shows x first, then y: after every shot a plane starts at the origin, flies left or right for x, turns, then flies up or down for y, with the moves labeled ("2 right", "3 down").
• Repeated shots are allowed on purpose: a student who keeps reversing x and y sees the plane land somewhere else and the miss stay on the board. The shot log lists every shot.
• Finding the enemy's shots: the computer names a coordinate and the student must select it on their own board. Wrong picks get feedback about the specific mistake (x and y swapped, wrong direction for x or y) and stronger hints each time; on the fourth try the path is drawn on the board.
• Hard mode: the computer's shots are given in words, often with y first ("The y-coordinate is −2 and the x-coordinate is 3", "Move 2 units down and 3 units right"). Students type full ordered pairs with parentheses and a comma. Radar Checks ask about quadrants, points on an axis, reading a highlighted point, and comparing points. Running out of time skips your shot, shows where the enemy's shot landed, or reveals the Radar Check answer.
• Nothing is saved: no accounts, no scores kept, no data stored. Every game starts fresh.
