Give this before the unit. It doesn't test the new standard (8.G.A.1–3, transformations). It checks the earlier skills those standards build on, so you can see who is ready and what to review first. The answer key and a guide to reading the results print after it.
Before we start: this unit is about sliding, flipping and turning shapes made of squares. This page shows what you already know about grids, symmetry and turns. It's fine if some of it is new. Try every question.

Part B: Symmetry 4.G.A.3
3. Draw the line of symmetry on the butterfly. What happens to the two halves if you fold along it?
4. The pink line is a mirror. Shade the squares that make the picture match on both sides of it.

Part C: Turns 4.MD.C.5, 4.MD.C.6
5. How many degrees is a quarter turn? A half turn? A three-quarter turn? A full turn?
¼: ½: ¾: full:
6. Which way do a clock's hands turn? Circle one: clockwisecounterclockwise. Draw an arrow.
7. An arrow points up. It turns a quarter turn clockwise. Which way does it point now? After a half turn instead?
quarter: half:

Part D: Same size and shape 4.G.A.3
8. The blue figure and one yellow figure are the same size and shape. Circle it. How can you tell?
4 units, to the right. Pick one square and count to the matching square.
3 units, down.
A vertical line down the middle of the body; the two halves match exactly (one wing lands on the other).
Shade the mirror squares on the right of the line: each square is the same distance from the line, on the other side.
quarter 90°, half 180°, three-quarter 270°, full 360°
clockwise (from the top toward the right)
quarter turn: right; half turn: down
The figure on the left of the yellow ones (it is the blue figure turned): same squares, same arrangement. The one on the right has 5 squares, not 4.

Why it matters for this unit
If many students miss it
A: Counting units
Translations are counted square by square, in a direction.
Practice in Transformania with only Translations on.
B: Symmetry
A reflection is a fold: each square lands the same distance from the line, on the other side.
Fold paper shapes along a line before playing.
C: Turns
Rotations are counted in quarter-turns of 90°, clockwise or counterclockwise.
Turn real tracing paper around a pencil point, one quarter-turn at a time.
D: Same size and shape
Every image is congruent to its pre-image.
Cut out a shape and move it on the grid.
Reading the results: students strong on Parts A and C can start with the computer on Normal; students who missed Part C should do the guided tutorial and Practice with only Rotations first. Compare the “How sure do you feel?” circles with the answers: a student who feels sure but missed it needs a quick conversation.
