A warm-up for the start of class, before students play or start the worksheet. It reviews ratios and scaling using things students see every day, then asks them to think ahead to similar triangles. Two tickets print on each page; cut along the dashed line. The answer key prints on its own page after it.

2. On the map, 1 cm stands for 5 km. Two towns are 4 cm apart. How far is that really?
km
3. Lemonade uses 2 lemons for 3 cups of water. How many cups for 6 lemons?

4.Think ahead: a 4 ft child casts a 2 ft shadow. At the same time, a tree casts a 12 ft shadow. How tall do you think the tree is? Why?

Same Shape, New Size
3 × 2 = 6 in
4 × 5 = 20 km
6 lemons is 3 times as many, so 3 × 3 = 9 cups
Any reasoning counts. Today's answer: 24 ft. The shadow is 6 times as long (12 ÷ 2), so the tree is 6 times as tall (4 × 6).
Quick read: 7 cups on #3 or 14 ft on #4 means the student is adding the difference instead of multiplying. That's the misconception today's lesson is built around, so ask those students to explain their thinking first.
