A warm-up for the start of class, before students play or start the worksheet. It reviews squares and square roots using things students see every day, then asks them to think ahead to a right triangle on a baseball field. Two tickets print on each page; cut along the dashed line. The answer key prints on its own page after it.

Name
1. A square floor is 6 tiles on each side. How many tiles in all?
tiles
2. A square patio has an area of 81 ft². How long is each side?
ft
3. Find 3² + 4². Then find the square root of your answer.
3² + 4² = √ =
4.Think ahead: the bases on a baseball field are 90 ft apart. Is the throw from home plate straight to second base longer or shorter than running 90 + 90 = 180 ft? Why?

Squares and Roots
6 × 6 = 36 tiles
9 ft (9 × 9 = 81)
9 + 16 = 25; √25 = 5 (this is the 3-4-5 right triangle)
Shorter: a straight path is shorter than going around the corner. With today's rule: √(90² + 90²) ≈ 127 ft.
Quick read: 12 on #1 or 40.5 on #2 means the student confused squaring with doubling. Use #3 and #4 to open the lesson: #3 is a² + b² = c² in disguise.
