A warm-up for the start of class, before students play or start the worksheet. It reviews rates, points on a graph and patterns, using things students see every day, then asks them to think ahead to slope. Two tickets print on each page; cut along the dashed line. The answer key prints on its own page after it.
1. Each step rises 7 in and runs 10 in. Write rise ÷ run as a fraction.
rise ÷ run =
2. What are the coordinates of point P?
P( )
3. A taxi costs $3 to start plus $2 per mile. What does a 5-mile ride cost?
$
4.Think ahead: a pass goes in a straight line from (0, 0) to (4, 6). For every 1 step to the right, how far up does it go?

3 + 2 × 5 = $13
6 ÷ 4 = 1.5 up for every 1 across. That number is the slope, today's topic.
Quick read: (3, −2) on #2 means the student swapped x and y; $25 on #3 means they multiplied (3 + 2) by 5. Use #4 to open the lesson: "1.5 up per 1 across" is the slope of the pass, and every pass from the origin in the game works the same way.
