Area Artist

A multiplication art game. A hidden pixel-art picture is split into rectangles. The game zooms in on one rectangle at a time; find how many squares are in it by multiplying its rows by its columns (or find a missing side), and it fills in with its part of the picture. After each piece the game zooms out so you can see the picture growing. Product Picasso uses 1 by 1 up to 5 by 5 rectangles with every square drawn so it can be counted; Multiplication Monet uses 5 by 5 up to 12 by 12. In the art studio you design your own picture: choose two numbers, solve the multiplication, and place the rectangle anywhere. Finished pictures are kept in your gallery on this device.

Multiply to paint a hidden masterpiece

Teaching Notes for Educators

Students multiply to reveal a hidden pixel-art picture. The picture is cut into rectangles, and each one fills in with its part of the artwork once its multiplication is solved. The game zooms in on a random piece, so the picture stays a mystery until near the end, and zooms back out after each piece to show how it's growing.
